The Little Things: Markdown, Footnotes and Superscript

You may have noticed that I have begun to liberally sprinkle footnotes on my posts. This is due to a change in my writing workflow that is now heavily featuring markdown. One of the perks of writing in markdown is that tumblr has an editing option for it. If you did not know, look for it hidden in your options panel. Anyway, using footnotes necessitates the use of superscripts which break the vertical rhythm of your layout unless you prepare your CSS for that. I just stumbled across this problem elsewhere and was reminded how annoyed I was until I fixed the line spacing issue subscript and superscript causes. Just in case you decide to go for markdown and/or footnotes in the future, here is the solution I dropped into my tumblr theme:

 sup, sub {
 vertical-align: baseline;
 position: relative;
 top: -0.5em;
 }
 sub { top: 0.5em; }
